Narayanan was one of 44 high school students on the UGA campus this summer conducting research through the Young Dawgs program. Run by UGA Human. The UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences offers several summer programs designed to give youth and high school students the opportunity to explore and witness first-hand the academic experiences and potential careers obtained by CAES graduates. Reflecting our tagline “Life is a journey. Be prepared for the trip”, our program’s goal is for Destination Dawgs graduates to have gained new knowledge, skills, and competencies which lead to a rewarding adult life. This includes attaining a desired job, having an increased ability to live independently, and building relationships that expand their social networks.This non-degree Certificate program will support students with intellectual disabilities who are transitioning to adulthood an opportunity to prepare for a career and independent living over the course of 5 spring/fall semesters. Students will participate in UGA courses, gain valuable job skills, and build a social network based on individualized plans supported by peer mentors. Applications are due in mid-May each year.Select students will be invited to participate in a mid- July Summer Leadership Program from as a pre-requisite to program admittance. Students must be over 18 years old, have a documented disability, and have a desire to gain skills for self-determination,independent living, and career development at the University of Georgia. Students who are under partial or limited guardianship will be considered.

Description of our summer transition program:

The summer leadership Institute serves as a pre-requisite to admission into the Destination Dawgs program. This is a part of the application process, and an invite based 2 night, 3 day on campus program. Destination Dawgs appreciates a collaboration with the JW Fanning Institute for Leadership Development to facilitate this opportunity.

Destination Dawgs Academic Instructor works directly with UGA departments and instructors to request and secure seats in classes that occur in the UGA bulletin. In class, Destination Dawgs students are supported by peer mentors.

  • Housing for Destination Dawgs students is not currently available as a component of the program. Destination Dawgs program staff will not provide personal care and are available after academic program hours by arrangement only. Off-Campus Apartments: For students who cannot commute but wish to live independently near campus, a number of off –campus student apartments are available. Monthly rent, distance from campus, and amenities vary. Destination Dawgs program staff can assist incoming students and families with identifying housing options and with support providing organizations if assistance with personal care and daily living are required.
